It is important to consider the supplies that you need for the job of cleaning the grave marker. This is important. You want to be sure that you avoid anything that is abrasive, like power-washing equipment, brushes with hard bristles and similar things. You also want to avoid cleaning solutions like bleach, since they can stain the marker. Instead, use sponges, soft brushes, and soap, water, and detergent.

You want to look at the state of the marker before starting. If you see that it is crumbling, cracking, or that it has flaking, you want to avoid beginning the cleaning process. This can make the marker worse. You also want to be sure that the marker is stable so there are no issues with it falling and breaking.

For a marker made of marble, you want to start the planning process by wetting it with water. Since marble is porous, it will absorb any liquid and you do not want that to be the cleaning solution you are planning on using. If you see that there are signs of algae or other growths, you can add a small amount of ammonia to the water. Only do this if the marker is made of light marble, since ammonia can stain dark marble.

You can begin the process the same way for a granite marker. Do remember not to use any ammonia at all, however, because that can cause more damage. If you see algae or anything else growing on the marker, you can add an ounce of detergent to about five gallons of water and use that instead. Be sure to rinse the marker completely after you are done and be certain you never begin the cleaning process when the marker is dry.

These are some tips that can make it easier for you to maintain a loved one’s gravesite. It can be important to know about the tools you will need and the kind of cleaning solutions you can use.
