It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to a remarkable woman, Dorothy Jean Cook, whose presence illuminated the city of Dania Beach for many years.
Dorothy played a significant role in the community as a licensed real estate broker, bringing her expertise and warmth to her dealings throughout her 24 years of dedicated service. Her impact extended beyond the realm of real estate when she assumed the responsibilities of city commissioner in 1977. Following a unanimous vote in 1985, she was rightfully appointed as the interim Mayor of Dania Beach, a position in which she exemplified leadership and dedication.
Within her family circle, Dorothy was cherished as the daughter of Brazoria Cantrell Cook and Ernastine Franklin Cook (E.F. Cook). She shared her life's journey with siblings Robert, Ruby, Janelle, and Marilyn, along with nieces and nephews Mark, Deborah, Sharon, Tanis, Brenda, Darrell, and DeeAnne.
Known affectionately as "Jean" to those closest to her heart, she embodied honor, integrity, and a timeless sense of business ethics. Her reputation for sealing deals with a handshake spoke volumes about her unwavering commitment to honesty—her word was indeed her bond.
To many individuals whose lives she touched, Dorothy was not just a friend but a maternal figure lovingly referred to as "Mama Jean." Her generosity knew no bounds; she extended kindness and love effortlessly to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Gregarious in nature with an unwavering loyalty that endeared her to many; her quick wit brought laughter wherever she went.
A vision of poise and elegance, Dorothy's fondness for hats earned her the endearing title of the "Hat Lady" among community members. It seemed that everyone in Broward County either knew her personally or knew of the remarkable woman she was.
Dorothy Jean Cook has left an indelible mark on countless lives. Her absence will be deeply felt by numerous friends, relatives, and associates who treasured her presence. Among those mourning her passing are lifelong friend and attorney Leonard Stolar, loyal assistant Doris Franklin, as well as Denise Giordano, Ernastine Henderson, Miguel Santos, Dmyra Galip, Ximena Andino—who were fortunate enough to share in the light that Dorothy brought into their lives.
As we reflect on the legacy left behind by Dorothy Jean Cook—a beacon of strength and compassion—we find solace in the memories we hold dear. May she rest in peace knowing that her spirit will forever reside in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her luminous soul.
