Iris loved to laugh. Not just smile or a giggle, but a deep, robust, belly laugh that would light up her face and the room around her. She was happiest making others laugh, whether she was cooking a holiday meal for her family while a steady stream of friends and neighbors walked through her door, or working on arts and crafts projects with her grand kids. It was caring for others that bought her joy.

When she was practically a child herself Iris helped care for her younger sisters; a role that she never gave up even after her sisters became woman with families of their own. As a teenager she decided that caring for others would be her life’s calling. She pursued a nursing degree at Bellevue Nursing School, launching a nursing career spanning over forty years. Her dedication to her patients consumed her, especially when the patient was a young child with special needs. Iris did not just care for the patient, she cared for the whole family, developing friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Her role as a nurse was only eclipsed by her role as a wife and a mother to her two sons. She was more than a mother, she was a friend. She lived for her sons and for her grandchildren. They were the light of her world, the joy that propelled her laugh.

In the days to come all who loved her: her husband, her sons, her grandchildren, her sisters, and other family and friends will think of her often. They will comfort each other by sharing stories, things that Iris said or did that made them laugh. And they will laugh, and up in heaven Iris will laugh too.
