Jorge Enrique Herrera, a man of unwavering dedication, profound generosity, and a distinguished career in accounting was born to Carmen Pua and Florencio Herrera in Barranquilla, Colombia, in 1936. Jorge was the beloved husband of the late Orfelina Herrera Osorio, with whom he shared 56 years of a loving and enduring marriage until her passing in October 2016. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, compassion, and a commitment to making a difference.
Jorge, the eldest of seven siblings, demonstrated a sense of responsibility from a young age, supporting his mother and younger siblings in Colombia. This early commitment laid the foundation for a lifetime marked by resilience and dedication to family.
After moving to New York in his early twenties, Jorge pursued a successful career in accounting. His accomplishments included obtaining a CPA license and working for Pan American Airlines. A true entrepreneur, he later established his own accounting business, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. In his later years, Jorge found joy in imparting his knowledge, teaching college accounting courses, and contributing to the education of future professionals.
Beyond the world of numbers, Jorge was a man of words and literature. An avid reader, he authored a glossary book of accounting terms, a testament to his passion for bridging linguistic gaps between Spanish and English.
Jorge's generosity extended far beyond professional achievements. For many years, he quietly donated to between 15 to 20 charities annually, embodying the spirit of selfless giving as emphasized in Matthew 6:1-4.
In addition to his dedication to family and career, Jorge enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He was a connoisseur of literature, a lover of fine music, a die-hard Mets fan, and an enthusiast of world travel. His appreciation for the finer things was evident in his enjoyment of a fine glass of wine, a great shot of whisky and the beauty he found in exploring different cultures.
Jorge Enrique Herrera is survived by his four children: George, John, Jose and Jennifer. He leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories, cherished by family, friends, and those fortunate enough to have crossed paths with this remarkable man.
