Sandra Ann (Sandy) Phegley, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, age
78, of Coconut Creek, Florida, died on June 22, 2019, in her home with family by her side.
Sandra was born on May 28, 1941, to Clare and Mabel West. The eldest of three sisters, she
was raised in Lincoln, Nebraska. After high school, she attended Lutheran Hospital School of
Nursing in St. Louis, Missouri, and graduated as an RN. In 1964 she married Bruce Phegley, and
after a brief career in nursing, Sandy became a stay-at-home mom to their two children, Laures
and Scott, who were raised in Overland Park, Kansas.
As a somewhat overwhelmed young mother, she was watching Billy Graham on TV and her
heart was regenerated as she heard the Gospel. She repented of her sins and prayed to receive
Christ as her savior. She was hungry to know more and eagerly joined Bible Studies and
Women’s Aglow Fellowship. She grew strong in her faith and regularly encouraged those
around her.
In 1976, the family moved to Coconut Creek, where Sandra was involved in the church and
community. She played Bunco monthly with the same group of ladies for over 30 years. Her
passions were personal relationships, sharing the Gospel, and reading.
Sandy leaves behind her husband Bruce (married for 55 years), daughter Laures and son-in-law
Mike Merryman, granddaughters Rachel Dowling (Tyler), Megan Merryman, Brooke Merryman
and Heather Merryman, sisters Gayle Glenn (Chad) and Joyce Pester, and nieces and nephews
.
She is predeceased by her son Scott and her parents Clare and Mabel West.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 28, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian
Church in Coral Springs. A Celebration of Life luncheon will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Riverside
Church in North Lauderdale.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Presbyterian Church. The
family is grateful for all of the prayers, love and support that has been shown by so many.
